Luigi De Magistris, mayor of Napoli, gave back to Napoli the title of pearl of the Mediterranean, turning the city into the capital of the Italian tourism. Napoli is now one of the top visited cities in Italy and is not just because the city is plenty of history and art, but is the folklore of its people to make this city so special.
A: “I am going to Sorrento next month”
B: “Are you? That’s cool! Are you going to visit Naples too?”
A: “Naples is drowning in garbage and I don’t want to be shot to be honest!”
This is a real conversations, perhaps outcome of the possible harmful effect of watching too much television, I had with a colleague of mine in England a while ago.
The image of Naples abroad was inevitably associated with Mafia and garbage. In 2010 only 35% of the rooms available in the city were occupied by tourist.
This scenario has astonishingly changed after the election of Luigi De Magistris as mayor of Naples in 2011, who doubled the figures in only three years.
Looks like De Magistris is giving back to Naples the title of capital of Mediterranean.
The mayor has made the change possible balancing the budget of the municipality, recovering the monuments of the city at zero cost to the community, implementing recycling collection door to door and improving the public transportation. Nowadays Naples is plenty of tourists, vibrant cradle of culture and art.
It’s lovely to enjoy the city thanks to traffic restrictions on the waterfront and in the historic centre, bumping into coloured and lively paddlers (most of them now legalized!), enjoining delicious street food and viewing breathtaking landscapes.

The key of success of this beautiful city is not an heroic mayor but is his idea of participatory democracy. He is trying to open a dialogue with common people, building a great popular agora: this may make Naples a critical voice in Europe. The massive participation of citizens to help the community and the collective use of existing common goods are impressive examples of how the things can change from the bottom.
